PLUG-IN HYBRID Q4
The 1.3-litre turbocharged gasoline engine that powers the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 ensures smooth response and acceleration, while the electric motor offers an output of 90 kW peak power: this combination delivers a total output of 280 HP. The full driving range (gasoline + electric) that the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 can cover is up to 600 km.
Considering that most private cars are parked overnight, charging the battery pack of a plug-in hybrid car at home with a domestic power supply is useful for those who need their vehicle ready to hit the road the following morning.
Using public charging stations is becoming increasingly accessible as the charging network is expanding constantly. The battery pack can get to a full charge in only 2.5 hours.
MY ALFA CONNECT
With the My Alfa Connect app, you can access all the connected services of your Alfa Romeo. You can plan your next journey by calculating the vehicle's range and locating the nearest charging station to your location. Additionally, you can easily access the eSolutions Charging app and manage your home wallbox remotely.

Fuel combined consumption Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 range (l/100 km): 1,4 – 1,1; combined energy consumption (kWh/100km): 18,7 – 16,8; CO2 emissions (g/km): 33-26. Up to 82 km of full electric range is referred to the urban cycle. Total driving range is the full possible range achieved mixing petrol autonomy with the full electric autonomy in city drive style. Type approval values are determined on the basis of the WLTP cycle, homologated as of 4.11.2022. The values indicated are for comparative purposes. The fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and range figures may vary depending on actual conditions of use and on different factors such as: charging frequency, driving style, speed, specific equipment, options, format of tires, outside temperature and thermal comfort on board the vehicle.
All you need to know about Hybrid cars
Alfa Romeo is entering the world of hybrid technology with the Tonale Hybrid and the new Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4.
Alfa Romeo now looks to the future through the Tonale Hybrid and the new Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4. The Brand’s two first hybrid models represent a new chapter in its history: iconic lines alongside an innovative idea of efficient sportiness.
Hybrid means using more than one power source for a new efficient driving experience. The result is better fuel economy with low emissions.
SUV is an abbreviated term for Sports Utility Vehicle: this type of vehicle provides a more raised position for the drive than other cars. In the case of a hybrid SUV, you will feel the power of a traditional combustion engine powered by gasoline working alongside an electric motor.
A hybrid car combines a traditional combustion engine with the power of an electric motor. With the technology of regenerative braking, they can also recharge their battery while you drive, capturing energy from deceleration and delivering it to your vehicle.
• ICE: Internal Combustion Engine (internal combustion engine) is the traditional thermal energy engine (petrol, diesel, etc.) in which fuel combustion is activated through an oxidizer (usually air) inside a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the movement circuit of the fluid.
• MHEV: this type offers a combination of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, like the Alfa Romeo Tonale Hybrid. The battery is charged by the internal combustion engine and by regenerative braking. On the Alfa Romeo Tonale Hybrid, when the battery is charged, this hybrid technology allows several driving maneuvers in full electric mode.
• HEV: internal combustion engine and electric motor combined. The battery is charged by the internal combustion engine and by regenerative braking. Battery performance allows for short trips in all-electric mode.
• Plug-in Hybrid: this type offers a combination of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, like the Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4. The battery is also charged from an external source (charging socket) and through regenerative braking. On the Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4, the battery performance allows journeys up to 80 km in the urban EV range.
• BEV: traction is provided exclusively by an electric motor. Driving is electric and charging is achieved only through an external source and regenerative braking.
• REEV: has a small gasoline powered generator to recharge the battery and allow extended range when the battery level is low.
Plug-In Hybrid is one of the best solution to exploit the strengths of using an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor combined. Furthermore, within the hybrid world, the Plug-In Hybrid guarantees optimal balance between electric range, charge time, fuel economy, driveability and performance.
Plug-In Hybrid cars offer many of the advantages of electric vehicles, such as lower running costs, a silent journey, and zero emissions in the case of pure electric driving, while ensuring the flexibility of a conventional combustion engine for longer trips, without necessarily recharging the battery from an external source. The combination of the combustion engine and the electric motor can also allow the vehicle to deliver a higher level of torque and performance than conventional larger-displacement engines. Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 represents an advanced solution, which will increase performance and driving comfort by ensuring reductions in operating costs and lower emissions than thermal engine vehicles. Furthermore, where applicable, you may take advantage of tax benefits like reduced road tax.
The time range will be around 2.5 hours, when using in power upgrade (easyWallbox up to 7.4 kW or public charging station).
Through the vehicle’s Infotainment system, or by the My Alfa Connect mobile app.During the individual charging at home, you will have the possibility to set the preferred charging time (over-night for example) and choose the power level of the charging program through a dedicated section in the infotainment system.
The ICE engine (internal combustion engine) will automatically turn on to guarantee on-road driving. The system is designed to guarantee a minimum level of charge in order to ensure Q4 performance.
The batteries are designed to function properly at all the average temperatures of the year. Autonomy can be reduced depending upon exposure of the car to very warm temperatures for a very long time, as energy is used to cool the batteries. Similarly, in the case of very low temperatures, the autonomy will be reduced because the energy will be used to heat the batteries.
The vehicle will charge while driving, or by connecting it to an external power outlet.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 will charge the battery through:
1- Regenerative braking: it converts the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electrical energy and uses it to charge the battery, instead of wasting it as thermal energy as with conventional ICE brakes. Electric motors consume energy to provide movement. When this movement is no longer required (for example in the slowing down phase), the braking force is used to reverse the motor action and generates electricity. The process is known as regenerative braking and the electricity generated can be sent to the battery. In the right conditions the autonomy of an electric car can be extended by more than 10%, due to the collection of regenerated electricity.
2- E-Save driving mode: by setting this mode, the system will keep the battery at a defined charge level, or can recharge the battery up to a set threshold.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 will be equipped with a domestic charging cable (called Mode 2) which will connect to the vehicle's Type 2 socket. This means that you will be able to charge the car from a home garage or at home, if an external socket is present. An on-board charger converts alternating current into direct current for charging. Through the infotainment interface, or through the appropriate My Alfa Connect app that you will be able to download on your smartphone, it will be possible to set the recharge time and maximum current threshold that you require to absorb from your home system. For a faster charge, you will have the possibility to install a domestic wall box, called easyWallbox which charges faster than a conventional socket. For a more powerful and faster charging session you can also install eProWallbox, a wall box that operates up to 22 kW.
• Standard: Home charging cable. The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 is already equipped with a standard domestic charging cable which can be connected to any domestic socket.
• Optional: High speed charging cable. Type 3 charging cable that allows you to charge the vehicle from a public charging column and from an eProWallbox.
